AMAZING trip to South African townships
Betty (our Deputy Manager and Toddler Room Head) and Keri (our Baby Room Head) had the most amazing opportunity to visit South Africa to see first hand where our hard work fundraising money for projects has gone. We visited Educares’ (nurseries) that have been built in impoverished townships, joined in with training for the ‘Mama’s’ that run them, visited healthcare centres that provide vital health services and had the opportunity to visit lots of different ‘educares’ … all of which struggle to get funding and remain viable in desperately deprived areas in the townships that need these facilities. We got to see first-hand the terrible conditions that children are raised in, which was - at times - very emotional. We were lucky enough to sit in on some of the training sessions for the Mamas and practitioners. We sat and listened to their stories and learned how they are able to live and work in these conditions and deliver for the children with the limited resources that they have. We also explained and shared how we practise childcare in our nursery settings.
We have been busy fundraising by organising various events such as:
Cake sales, quiz nights, Christmas jumper day, children’s photography and a raffle in which lovely prizes were donated by our local community. We have other fundraising events coming up such as our Open Day/Fete on the 21st June 2014.
In the last year we have raised over £1,000 for our charity partner The Auntie Foundation, and having been blessed with the opportunity to visit the projects that we support, are determined to raise more over the next year. We would like to thank all of our wonderful parents for their help and continued support in this.
